York Cougars~Ready for 2012 Season

York Cougars ready to tackle tough region, prove 2011 wasn’t a fluke

By Bret McCormick

Folks might have thought Bobby Carroll crazy when he left a lofty perch at South Pointe High School to become the head football coach at York Comprehensive before the 2011 season. But Carroll found family at York, literally and figuratively. His son, quarterback Spencer, is at the school, as are a number of assistant coaches that played for Carroll, offering a familial environment. And Carroll silenced his doubters by producing the same kind of lengthy playoff run that he was accustomed to at South Pointe, the kind that’d nearly been forgotten at York.  Read Article

Carroll lauds academic success at York awards

By Gene Graham – genegraham@comporium.net

YORK — First-year head football coach Bobby Carroll lauded York Comprehensive High School football players for success in the classroom and on the gridiron during last week’s awards ceremony.

“There are only two failed courses among the returning varsity football players,” Carroll told an attentive audience in the school auditorium.

Carroll said much emphasis is placed on classroom performance. “We want our players to do well in the classroom,” he said. “They can’t go to college making Cs and Ds.”

Carroll issued special praise to the Cougars’ ninth-grade football team for an unbeaten season. “South Pointe’s ninth-grade team had lost two games in seven years, and they beat them,” he noted.

Ninth-grade head coach Luke Nyegaard noted that the Cougars scored 243 points and were behind only four times all season. Carroll also commended the jayvee team for finishing 7-2.

Carroll said the football program’s massive support base begins with his wife, Sherry, “the greatest football wife on the face of the earth.”

He thanked YCHS Principal Diane Howell, York schools Superintendent Vernon Prosser, athletic director Steve Boyd, the booster club and touchdown club for their loyalty to the football program.

He offered special praise for the Cougar band and cheerleaders for their contributions every Friday night. “Our band goes to every football game, home and away,” noted Carroll. “People don’t know how hard our cheerleaders work.”

Carroll also recognized his friend in Cougar Country, Kevin Montgomery, affectionately known as “Starsky.”

Though the varsity football team won 10 games and made a run in the state playoffs, Carroll said there’s work to be done. “I want our players to wear state championship rings,” he said. “It’s all about the players and winning football games.

“Losing hurts more than winning feels good.”

Bobby Carroll – New Coach at YCHS

South Pointe’s Carroll named new coach at York Comprehensive

By Barry Byers – bbyers@heraldonline.com YORK —

Bobby Carroll will become the football coach at York Comprehensive High School, returning to coach in the town where he grew up, played sports and still lives.

Carroll is leaving South Pointe High, where he built the Stallions’ football program into a state power in just six years. He started the program when the school opened.

His hiring was approved Tuesday night by the York school district board and was announced by York schools superintendent Vernon Prosser. The move was not surprising and had been rumored to be in the works since York decided not to renew the contract of football coach Mike Propst after just one season.  Read Article…
